Printing in Germany Industry Data and Analysis

MK
Melanie Katz
Analyst Frankfurt, Germany July 2026

The printing industry is characterised by a wide variety of products and a broad customer base, meaning that demand for the services provided by industry players does not depend on just one customer group or a single influencing factor. Nevertheless, ongoing digitalisation has led to an average annual decline in industry turnover of 3 per cent between 2021 and 2026. The declining demand for printed products primarily affects the printing of books and magazines, as their content is increasingly being read online or as e-books. Due to falling print orders and price rises for input factors such as paper and printing ink, the profit margin as a proportion of turnover has been declining slightly since 2021. In 2026, turnover in the printing industry is expected to fall by 1.4 per cent to 13.8 billion euros. One of the reasons for the decline in turnover this year is consumers’ reluctance to spend on non-essential products such as magazines. This is attributable, amongst other things, to the high levels of inflation over the past few years and the growing number of free information sources available online.
