Domestic fertiliser manufacturers have been operating under market conditions that have, in some cases, been very difficult in recent years. This is partly due to increasingly stringent regulation, which is intended to reduce farmers’ use of fertilisers in the long term. However, the main reason for the negative trend in recent years was the economic upheaval caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The energy crisis of 2022 caused prices of key raw materials and energy products, such as natural gas, to rise very sharply at times. As Russian nitrogen fertiliser was not subject to European Union sanctions after 2022 – due to Europe’s heavy reliance on imports in this sector – the pressure on imports from that country subsequently increased. The higher material and energy costs faced by domestic producers, when compared directly, led to a loss of market share and international competitiveness. Significant parts of the sector were therefore forced to reduce their production substantially during this period. As capacity utilisation declined, the profitability of many industry players also came under severe pressure. It was not until 2025 that the situation began to ease, due to rising prices for key types of fertiliser, reduced procurement pressures and the introduction of punitive tariffs on fertilisers from Russia and Belarus. Overall, the sector’s turnover has fallen by an average of 1.8% per year since 2021.
