Radiator & Boiler Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

The development of the sector is significantly influenced by the construction industry and building construction in particular. As construction activity increases, so does the demand for heating systems. Technological developments are also influencing the industry, as are environmental awareness and the resulting regulations for the purpose of environmental protection.Despite strong competition, weak demand and the after-effects of the Ecodesign Directive introduced in 2015, which places higher demands on the energy efficiency of heating systems, the industry started the past five-year period with an increase in sales. This was due to the fact that industry players were able to adapt to the stricter regulations. Above all, however, the rising price of steel, consolidations within the industry and new corporate strategies ensured growth in sales figures, which continued despite the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. As a result, industry turnover has risen by an average of 3.3% per year over the past five years and is expected to reach €4.1 billion in the current year. In the current year, industry turnover is therefore likely to increase by 4.1 %. Significantly higher energy efficiency requirements and subsidies for modern, energy-efficient heating systems in Germany are responsible for this.In the next five years, industry turnover is expected to increase by an average of 4.8% per year, reaching a value of 5.2 billion euros in 2029. This increase is primarily due to the extremely high demand for new heating systems as a result of the Building Energy Act. In addition, industry players are increasingly developing into system providers and reducing their vertical integration. The main aim here is to reduce costs and increase profit margins. The product range is clearly moving towards the lower price segment, also in order to be able to compete with foreign suppliers. However, there is also potential for growth in the sector. Currently, around 50 % of heating systems installed in German households do not correspond to the current state of the art. Statutory regulations and subsidies should accelerate this change, while modern and efficient heating systems also offer private households an opportunity to save costs.

Trends and Insights

  • The entry into force of the Building Energy Act led to a huge increase in demand for more environmentally friendly heating systems. The law greatly tightened the requirements for the energy efficiency of buildings and heating systems.
  • Gas-fired central heating boilers are the largest product segment in the industry. Gas condensing boilers are increasingly replacing condensing boilers, as they are more economical and space-saving and can be combined with renewable energies such as solar thermal systems.
  • The largest share of companies in this sector can be found in the Central region, followed by the South region. In addition to a high share of the total population, these regions are home to a particularly large number of companies from upstream and downstream sectors of the heating industry value chain.
  • A significant proportion of domestic demand is met by imports. As a result of lower production costs, foreign manufacturers are able to offer their products at lower prices.
