Postal & Courier Activities in Germany industry analysis

The industry and its individual business areas have seen largely positive development in recent years. However, one major problem has been the recruitment of labour. In order to save costs and ensure on-time deliveries, employees often have to put up with long working hours and low pay. This reduces the attractiveness of the parcel delivery profession and has made it difficult for market players to find employees in recent years. The coronavirus pandemic has presented the industry with additional challenges. Due to the restrictions on public life, the number of parcels sent by online retailers increased significantly, while other business areas were temporarily affected by a decline in demand. Industry sales are expected to fall by 2% to 76.7 billion euros in the current year. For the period from 2019 to 2024, this results in an average annual increase in turnover of 6.3%.While the parcel sector has become the growth engine of the industry thanks to the flourishing online trade, the increasing digitalisation of society is detrimental to the traditional letter business. In the recent past, correspondence by post has increasingly been replaced by various forms of electronic communication. However, the impact on correspondence is now limited, as a certain basic level has already been reached that can hardly be reduced by sending e-mails and other electronic messages. Accordingly, the number of letters sent has remained relatively stable in recent years. Due to the booming online trade, the positive effect of advancing digitalisation on the industry now even outweighs the negative one.The strong demand for parcel services is expected to continue until 2029 and other industry segments such as courier services should be able to recover from the crisis. Industry revenue is expected to grow by an average of 0.8% per year, totalling EUR 79.7 billion in 2029. In order to better cope with the rising number of orders, industry players are investing heavily in the expansion of their distribution and logistics centres and in research into new technologies. IBISWorld expects that the number of industry players and employees will also increase by 2029.

Trends and Insights

  • The industry is suffering from a labour shortage. Strong sales growth and the increasing spread of online retail have led to a high demand for labour in the industry over the past five years.
  • Formal delivery of letters accounts for only a small proportion of deliveries. This area includes the delivery of registered mail and other mail items that require personal acceptance by the addressee.
  • There is a particularly high demand for courier and messenger services in urban centres with a strong office sector, such as the Rhine-Main metropolitan region. The centre region therefore accounts for the largest share of companies in the sector.
  • Since Deutsche Post had to open up its infrastructure to other companies, it has become easier for smaller providers to compete with the big market players. Nevertheless, there is little room for small delivery services alongside them.
