Plastering in Germany industry analysis

The plastering and rendering industry has experienced a period of growth over the past five years. Since 2019, its total turnover has risen by an average of 3.5% per year. Due to the upturn in the construction industry up to 2022 and the numerous orders that came with it, companies were able to increase their turnover. Higher growth was prevented by the prevailing competition on the market, the shortage of skilled labour and the fragmentation of the industry. Numerous small and medium-sized craft businesses are active in the sector. The industry players carry out both exterior and interior work and therefore cover a wide range of services. However, the lack of labour is problematic. Although wages in the skilled trades have risen, it is extremely difficult for companies to find new employees. The German Confederation of Skilled Crafts assumes that there is a shortage of up to 200,000 workers in all branches of the skilled crafts sector combined. In 2024, the sector is expected to generate a turnover of 7.9 billion euros, which corresponds to a decrease of 1.4% compared to the previous year. Since 2023, the industry's business prospects have deteriorated noticeably throughout the European economic area with the turnaround in interest rates in July 2022, with new construction activity in particular declining sharply since then.In the next five years, IBISWorld forecasts that the industry will grow more slowly than in the previous five-year period. Average annual growth of 2.7% is expected, meaning that total turnover should amount to 9 billion euros in 2029. Growth should also be driven by various subsidy programmes in the area of building insulation. Insulation work accounts for over a third of the sector's turnover and is becoming increasingly important, as the development of new materials and processes can greatly reduce a building's energy and heat consumption. Restoration work is also becoming increasingly important for the sector. However, income here is very much dependent on the budgets of public institutions.

Trends and Insights

  • The industry players are increasingly working as subcontractors on large construction sites. Although trade companies have a low profit margin in such constellations, subcontractor activities guarantee a certain level of capacity utilisation, enable long-term cooperation and open the door to follow-up orders.
  • Water, noise and fire protection work is the most lucrative service in the plastering and rendering industry. The proportion of thermal insulation work has recently increased, which is due to the promotion of thermal and energy efficiency in new buildings.
  • The south of Germany is home to the largest number of companies in the sector. Numerous construction companies have settled there, acting as clients for the sector, which also makes the area attractive for trade businesses.
  • Competition in the plastering and rendering industry is moderate. The industry is mainly characterised by very small companies that only operate regionally.
