Passenger Air Transport in Germany industry analysis

In 2020, industry sales slumped by 55% due to the pandemic. This is due to the many cancelled or reduced flight connections. Prior to this, the industry had already been impacted by the insolvency of Germania in 2019. In addition, foreign low-cost carriers (LCCs) such as Ryanair have increased the intensity of competition for the players. Due to all of these factors, industry revenue fell by an average of 2.8% per year between 2019 and 2024. In the current year, however, it is expected to increase by 2.1% to 19.9 billion euros, as significantly more flight connections are being offered again than in the crisis years. The average price of crude oil in 2022 was significantly higher than the pre-crisis level of 2019 due to the Ukraine conflict, and is likely to remain at a very high level this year. The high oil price is making flight tickets more expensive and depriving consumers of purchasing power and business customers of funds for business trips.By 2029, IBISWorld anticipates average annual growth of 2.4% to industry turnover of 22.5 billion euros. The industry is not expected to have largely recovered from the negative effects of the pandemic until 2025. The remaining industry players are even likely to benefit from a certain degree of global market consolidation. Climate change is likely to become an even greater focus of public attention. It is already clear that state subsidies for Deutsche Bahn AG will increase significantly in the coming years. As a result, external competition in domestic German transport is likely to increase further.

Trends and Insights

  • Competition from airlines from the Gulf and Bosporus is increasing. Turkish Airlines has developed into a serious competitor on long-haul routes in recent years, particularly for the Lufthansa Group. The Gulf carriers benefit from the favourable location of their hubs and lower personnel costs.
  • The industry generates the largest share of its sales with flights to Europe excluding Germany. Intra-European flights are currently even more tourism-driven than usual.
  • The Süd region has the highest proportion of companies in the sector. As Bavaria is also relatively prosperous in rural areas, many small aviation companies have settled in the many small airports in this federal state.
  • The high market concentration is due to the dominant position of Deutsche Lufthansa AG in German air transport. This has been further strengthened by the insolvencies of Air Berlin in August 2017 and Germania in February 2019.
