Oven, Furnace & Furnace Burner Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

In the last five years, industry turnover in the manufacture of ovens has been subject to strong fluctuations. Since 2021, industry turnover has fallen by an average of 3.4% annually. On the one hand, the fluctuations are due to the high turnover in 2021, which helped the industry to develop positively immediately after the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, there was a sharp decline in turnover in 2024 and 2025, which was mainly due to the falling production volume in the manufacturing industry. Production volumes fell due to the geopolitical conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the international trade conflicts between the USA, China and Europe and the poor competitiveness of the German mechanical engineering industry compared to its international competitors. Furthermore, the slump in sales in the heat pump segment due to the change in government and the associated uncertainties surrounding the German Building Energy Act (GEG) also had a negative impact on sales.

Industry turnover is expected to increase by 1% to around 3.4 billion euros in 2026. This is mainly due to the recovery from the weak domestic economy and the expected amendment to the GEG to promote planning security and efficiency when installing heating systems. Industry players are only gradually recovering from the decline in sales and are still risk-averse when it comes to investments. In contrast, the competition in international trade is catching up thanks to rapid research and development results. The reason for the reluctance to invest is the high production costs in Germany. Personnel and administrative expenses are high compared to foreign competitors, mainly due to the strict bureaucracy. As a result, foreign competitors can lower their prices, which is only possible for German manufacturers of burners and stoves at a loss of profit. Nevertheless, due to its export-orientation, the industry can expect a slight increase in exports over the next few years. Despite the tariffs imposed on machinery (15%) and steel elements in machinery (50%) in 2025, the USA will remain a major export partner for industry players. The high demand for heated buildings in large cities in the USA and the increasing focus on sustainable heating systems and installations will benefit German manufacturers of burners and stoves, primarily for stoves and heat pumps.

Trends and Insights

  • In addition to tapping into new sales markets abroad, the spare parts business is becoming increasingly important for industry players. In terms of industry turnover, components for burners, ovens and other thermal systems now represent the second largest product group in the industry.
  • In addition to fluctuations in sales of heat pumps on the domestic market, demand abroad is also subject to fluctuations. Exports of heat pumps have also fallen due to strong competition abroad.
  • Manufacturers of ovens and burners benefit from their geographical proximity to their customers and often locate near them. North Rhine-Westphalia has by far the highest number of production sites.
  • The industry players compete with each other primarily on the basis of their product portfolio, technological leadership and reputation. In order to retain customers, industry players are continuously investing in the expansion of their spare parts business, which usually also includes maintenance services.
