Office & Shop Furniture Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

Rising procurement costs due to supply bottlenecks, high energy and material prices as well as significant wage increases led to price increases for sector-specific furniture, which companies were only able to pass on to downstream sectors to a limited extent. Nevertheless, there was strong demand for office furniture in 2022. Under the changing conditions of an increasingly hybrid working environment, domestic corporate customers in particular invested in the attractiveness of their offices and in modern office equipment. In contrast, demand for furniture for working from home was lower than in 2020 and 2021.Demand for office and shop furniture levelled off over the course of 2023. Planned investments were postponed and major projects were booked less frequently. This was also due to delays in the completion of new buildings, the difficult economic situation and contradictory signals from politicians. Stagnating new orders lead to declining sales. Over the last five-year period, the decline in turnover averaged 1.8% per year.In 2024, a year-on-year decline in sales of 1.5% is expected and sales are likely to be around 5.6 billion euros. The order situation is likely to remain tense at the beginning of the year, even if the investment backlog among customers is likely to ease in the foreseeable future and contribute to an increase in demand. The business climate in the sector has improved in recent months. This is due to a better business situation and more optimistic business expectations. The current wage settlements and rising logistics costs, including the CO2 surcharge, are likely to lead to rising prices for office furniture in 2024. In this context, the instrument of short-time working, which is used by almost half of the companies in the sector, continues to play a major role.Average growth of 1.6% per year is expected over the next five years. Turnover is expected to be around 6 billion euros in 2029. As digitalisation progresses, new work concepts and changing stationary salesrooms offer great sales potential. However, the trend towards working from home is likely to reduce the need for office workstations in the coming years, which will have a negative impact on the sector's sales development. It is also likely that many consumers will turn to cheaper products manufactured abroad due to their lower willingness to pay compared to corporate customers, which will reduce the positive effect on demand as the home office becomes more widespread.

Trends and Insights

  • Ergonomically designed seating and workstations are fuelling demand for industry products. As employees are attaching ever greater importance to their well-being at work, employers are increasingly creating back-friendly furniture such as height-adjustable desks.
  • Wooden furniture is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its sustainability and pleasant appearance. High-quality wooden furniture is also increasingly being purchased as part of the home office trend.
  • The highest number of companies can be found in the centre region. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, manufacturers benefit from a large supply of skilled labour and a good infrastructure.
  • Companies are facing increasingly fierce international competition. Cheaper products from Eastern Europe and Asia in particular are becoming increasingly popular with consumers.
