Materials Recovery in Germany industry analysis

The recycling industry is dedicated to the production of secondary materials and utilises waste from a wide variety of materials for this purpose. In addition to scrap metal, the players recycle used glass, paper and cardboard, plastics and construction and demolition waste. The companies also dismantle end-of-life vehicles, electrical appliances and other household appliances. The main consumer of secondary materials is German industry, especially the metal-producing industry in terms of revenue share. On the one hand, the recycling industry benefits from the fact that German society's environmental awareness has risen steadily in recent years and that legislators have responded with corresponding regulations aimed at increasing the recycling rate. On the other hand, the industry is heavily dependent on global commodity prices, such as the prices for metals like steel, aluminium and copper, for glass, paper and cardboard and for construction waste, when it comes to selling the secondary raw materials it produces.
Many commodity prices initially collapsed in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, but then rose sharply again, driving up the industry's turnover level. The main reason for the fall in commodity prices at the beginning of the pandemic was the significant reduction in production volumes in German and global industry and the resulting sharp drop in demand for materials. The significant increase in raw material prices in 2021 and 2022 is primarily due to the short-term shortage of raw materials and the significant rise in energy prices as a result of the war in Ukraine. As commodity prices are expected to fall again in 2024, IBISWorld anticipates a 6.5% decline in turnover to €22.3 billion for the current year. Since 2019, industry turnover has risen by an average of 2.5% per year.
Over the next five years, IBISWorld expects average annual industry growth of 1.5% and an industry turnover of 24 billion euros by 2029. Although the increase in society's environmental awareness is generally supporting the development of the industry, it is also slowing down the increase in waste generation, as regulatory measures are increasingly focussing on waste avoidance. This is unfavourable for the industry insofar as a low volume of waste generally has a negative impact on its turnover. Against this backdrop, the number of industry players is likely to fall slightly by 2029, although there are still niches to be filled in recycling.

Trends and Insights

  • The increase in metal prices has led to growth in industry turnover. In the medium to long term, metals are likely to become even more expensive and thus increase the attractiveness of secondary raw materials.
  • Revenues from the recycling of non-ferrous metals have risen sharply in recent years. The main reason for this was the significant increase in the price of aluminium.
  • The distribution of businesses is closely linked to the population strength of the regions. Many goods for recycling and scrapping come from consumers. Accordingly, the densely populated centre region has the largest number of companies in the sector.
  • The industry is dominated by small and medium-sized companies, which often play a dominant role in their respective regions. Recently, however, more and more small companies have been bought up by large waste management groups.

Industry Statistics and Trends

Market size and recent performance (2014-2029)

Industry revenue has grown at a CAGR of 2.5 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated €22.3bn in 2024.

Trends and Insights

Recycling companies reduce Germany's dependence on imports

  • Raw metals are hardly mined in Germany anymore. For metals and individual industrial minerals in particular, German companies are 99% dependent on imports due to the low primary raw material deposits in Germany. The import value for stone and earth raw materials was around 30% in 2022.

Industry revenue is measured across several distinct product and services lines, including Recycling of ferrous metals, Recycling of non-ferrous metals and Dismantling of ship and vehicle wrecks and other old goods. Recycling of ferrous metals is the largest segment of the Materials Recovery in Germany.

Trends and Insights

Revenue from the recycling of ferrous metals is increasing due to the rising price of steel

  • Ferrous metals primarily include iron and steel. These are used in many areas of application. The materials required for recycling are generated in the form of production waste, for example during cutting or stamping. Another source of material is old scrap, which comes from consumer and industrial goods that are no longer used.
