Beverage Production in Germany industry analysis

The sales performance of manufacturers of mineral water, soft drinks, beer, wine and spirits is primarily influenced by consumer behaviour. Since 2019, beverage manufacturers' turnover has fallen by an average of 0.2% per year. This is primarily due to the sharp drop in sales during the pandemic, as catering establishments had to close temporarily and therefore did not demand beverages. At the same time, sales of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in the food retail sector increased, although this was unable to offset the decline in sales in the catering sector. Since 2022, the catering and beverage production sectors have been recovering from the consequences of the pandemic. In the current year, sales are expected to grow by 0.3% to 27 billion euros. In recent years, the per capita consumption of alcohol has declined. At the same time, wine and spirits producers have benefited from the upward trend in consumer spending on alcoholic beverages, as consumers have been willing to spend more money on high-quality wines and spirits. In the non-alcoholic drinks sector, growing health awareness has contributed to a shift in demand towards reduced-sugar or sugar-free soft drinks. While the growing sales performance of supermarkets and discounters, one of the industry's most important sales markets, has had a positive impact on beverage manufacturers' sales in recent years, demand from wholesalers and the catering trade has fluctuated somewhat due to the pandemic. < />Between 2024 and 2029, industry turnover is expected to increase by an average of 0.9% per year to 28.2 billion euros. The continuing recovery of the catering industry from the pandemic should help to stabilise turnover and the number of industry players in beverage production.

Trends and Insights

  • Increased health awareness is fuelling demand for healthier beverage alternatives in Germany. Manufacturers are responding with low-sugar, alcohol-free options, natural ingredients and functional additives such as probiotics or vitamins.
  • Demographic change is hurting sales of traditional spirits in Germany. Liqueurs and speciality spirits such as vodka and gin are enjoying growing popularity, especially among younger consumers. Nevertheless, the shrinking main customer group threatens to impact sales in the long term.
  • The diversity of beverages produced in the industry is responsible for a moderate market concentration. Although there are clear market leaders in the respective product segments, such as Coca-Cola, most players have specialised in a specific area such as soft drinks or beer.
