Agricultural Support Services in Germany industry analysis

The situation of contractors essentially depends on the conditions in agriculture. Weather conditions, structural change within agriculture and regulations all play an important role in the success of the sector. Structural change, for example, means that farms are getting bigger and bigger, while their number is decreasing. On the one hand, this means that there are fewer potential clients, but on the other hand, individual contracts are becoming more and more attractive as their scope increases. The number of agricultural businesses fell from 421,100 in 2000 to 258,700 in 2022. Since 2019, turnover in the sector has increased by an average of 0.2% per year, meaning that it is expected to amount to 3.7 billion euros in 2024. This in turn corresponds to growth of 1.9% compared to the previous year. The extreme weather conditions in 2024 with high levels of precipitation and late frosts led to crop failures and had a significant impact on the order situation in the agricultural services sector. In many cases, the wet conditions made it impossible to carry out necessary plant protection and care measures. At the same time, producer prices for fertilisers and machinery remained at a high level, which further increased the economic burden on agricultural businesses. This leads to high costs for industry players. If the price increases cannot be passed on to customers, this has a negative impact on the profit margin of contractors. In the next five years, the industry is expected to record average annual sales growth of 0.8% and a total turnover of 3.9 billion euros in 2029. In particular, the expiry of subsidies for biogas plants under the Renewable Energy Sources Act and the further tightening of the Fertiliser Ordinance will pose challenges for industry players. As far as the latter is concerned, however, with their modern machines for spreading liquid manure close to the ground, they are well positioned to meet changing requirements. Nevertheless, industry players must continue to keep pace with technological progress and the increased use of smart farming and make corresponding investments in new equipment and machinery.

Trends and Insights

  • Machinery rings play an important role in the industry. Because of the high costs, the purchase of machines is often not worthwhile for individual farmers, which is why they join together in machine rings and use them jointly.
  • Fodder and grain harvesting is the industry's top-selling service. Contractors are responsible for the entire forage harvesting chain on around 23% of forage land.
  • The largest proportion of companies are located in the North region. Many processing companies and large agricultural businesses are active in Lower Saxony, which means that demand for industry services is high there.
  • Competition within the industry is moderate. Industry players compete for both customers and skilled labour. Contractors with a range of high-performance technology that is well tailored to customer needs are best able to assert themselves.

Trends and Insights

The change in agricultural structures is likely to lead to larger orders and tougher competition

  • The demand for services in the sector is likely to continue to increase in the course of structural change in agriculture. Agricultural businesses are constantly growing in size, making it increasingly difficult for them to cultivate their fields entirely without external support. Even for large agricultural businesses, the purchase of modern agricultural machinery is an investment that can hardly be shouldered, which is why contractors are often hired or machinery is borrowed from machinery rings.
