Agricultural & Forestry Machinery Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

The agricultural and forestry machinery sector has experienced positive growth over the past five years. Between 2019 and 2024, turnover in the sector increased at an average growth rate of 3.3% per year. The industry's sales development is significantly influenced by farmers' willingness to invest. Their investment behaviour has been volatile in the last five years due to changing weather conditions and volatile developments in milk and grain prices in individual years, but an upward trend has been observed overall. At the beginning of the last five-year period, overproduction of wheat led to a fall in the price of this grain, which had a negative impact on the earnings situation of agricultural businesses and therefore also limited the growth in turnover of industry players. Milk prices in Europe were also at a low level. Although the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 initially led to supply chain and production disruptions in the industry, the sharp rise in global demand for grain and government support measures for environmentally friendly and resource-saving agricultural technology ensured that industry players were able to build up high order backlogs and achieve significant increases in sales and turnover into 2023. In the current year, however, total turnover is expected to be only €17.9 billion, which corresponds to a decline of 14.3% compared to the previous year. This development is due to the decline in producer prices for agricultural products and the increase in financing costs for industry products since 2022.In the next five years, a positive, albeit less dynamic development of industry turnover is expected. It is expected to grow by an average of 1.4% per year until 2029 and then reach 19.2 billion euros. Future development is likely to focus on further innovations in the areas of digitalisation and automation of agricultural machinery. In the future, more and more agricultural machines are likely to be able to be controlled remotely or even work autonomously thanks to the 5G mobile communications standard.

Trends and Insights

  • In recent years, the number of companies has fallen minimally. The market power of the established agricultural technology groups and some medium-sized companies as well as technological barriers are the main obstacles to new companies entering the market.
  • Although larger mower-threshers have become more popular, the market for small machines seems to be picking up again somewhat. One topic for the future is likely to be the complete automation of the combine harvester.
  • Most of the companies in the sector are based in the Süd region. At the same time, the Süd region is home to around 50% of Germany's agricultural businesses.
  • The industry players are exposed to strong internal competition. The industry is primarily dominated by large international corporations.
