Industry resellers service niche markets while diversifying the revenue streams of infrastructure owners. Resellers have taken advantage of opportunities in the wireless telecommunications market as consumers have increasingly shifted away from fixed-line networks and towards mobile networks. However, network operators have been reluctant to wholesale 5G services recently, due to concerns around competition eroding product margins. This trend, coupled with declines in fixed-line connections, is expected to contribute to industry revenue falling at an annualised 1.3% over the five years through 2022-23 to $2.0 billion. This performance includes an anticipated 0.5% dip in the current year, as inflationary pressures diminish demand from consumers and prompt them to downgrade or cancel services.Resellers need to engage with upstream telecommunication networks to distribute their excess capacity. The mobile services segment has been the most fruitful, as demand for wireless telecommunications has continued to rise. Strong price-based competition between major carriers has enabled resellers to purchase wholesale bandwidth at lower rates, supporting growth in this segment. Despite the ACCC mandating lower wholesale access prices, mobile telecommunications resellers have passed on a proportion of these purchase cost savings to consumers to remain competitive. Rising competition has contributed to widespread merger and acquisition activity. The industry will recover over the next few years, rebounding from the disruptions caused by tough global economic conditions. The resale of fixed services is set to become an even more niche industry, with the completion of the NBN eliminating most fixed line reselling. Mobile network operators (MNO's) will become more competitive. Resold fixed line services have traditionally relied on Telstra's copper network and Optus's hybrid fibre-coaxial network, which have become increasingly obsolete on the back of the NBN's rollout. Demand for voice and other resold fixed telecommunications services will erode, as internet substitutes like software-based VoIP solutions reduce the need for these services. Industry revenue is forecast to grow at an annualised 0.9% over the five years through 2027-28 to an estimated $2.1 billion.
Industry revenue has declined at a CAGR of 1.3 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated $2.0bn in 2023.
Market size is projected to grow over the next five years.
